Brisbane was picked Wednesday, July 21, to host the 2032 Olympics.

International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, confirmed the inevitable winner after a vote at the IOC session in Tokyo and this triggered cheers from the Brisbane delegates in Tokyo and celebratory fireworks thousands of miles away in Brisbane.

“The International Olympic Committee has the honour to announce that the Games of the 35th Olympiad are awarded to Brisbane, Australia,” Bach said.

Brisbane will become the third Australian city to host the Summer Games after Melbourne (hosted in 1956) and Sydney (in 200o).

“We know what it takes to deliver a successful Games in Australia,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told International Olympic Committee voters in an 11-minute live video link from his office.

He added: “It’s a historic day not just for Brisbane and Queensland, but for the entire country.

“Only global cities can secure the Olympic Games, so this is fitting recognition for Brisbane’s standing across our region and the world.”

Brisbane follows 2028 host Los Angeles in getting 11 years to prepare for hosting the Games. Paris will host in 2024.

The 2032 deal for Brisbane looked done even months before the formal decision by IOC members at their meeting ahead of the Tokyo Games, which open Friday.

The IOC gave Brisbane exclusive negotiating rights back in February. That decision left Olympic officials in Qatar, Hungary and Germany looking blindsided with their own stalled bidding plans.

Brisbane was the first winner in a new bidding format. It lets the IOC approach potential candidates and pick them uncontested.

Hundreds of people packed Brisbane’s Southbank riverside precinct for an announcement viewing party, watching the city’s final pitch to the IOC projected on a big screen.

Rhys Cush, 24, one of those in the crowd, said he hoped to work at the 2032 Olympics and also attend as a spectator.

“I’m an extremely big fan. I even watched the softball this morning,” he told AFP. “I’m super excited about having the Olympics coming here.”

Lauren Granger, 42, said she hoped the 2032 Olympics would recreate the buzz of Sydney’s successful 2000 Games.

“We flew down to Sydney and we were at the Olympics and it was just such a great experience for our family,” she said.

“That was 20 years ago so we’d love to be able to relive that in 2032 with our kids.”

Fireworks lit up the skies above Brisbane following the announcement.

Super Eagles of Nigeria legend, Victor Ikpeba has declared that Super Eagles skipper, Ahmed Musa is among Nigeria’s greatest strikers ever.

It would be recalled that Musa scored twice for Nigeria at the 2014 and 2018 World Cup tournaments to become the country’s top World Cup goalscorer.

Musa, 28, is currently Nigeria’s third most-capped player with 98 appearances behind Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama with 101 and 100 caps respectively.

Musa recently signed a two-year deal with Turkish Super Lig side Fatih Karagumruk ending his time with Nigerian Professional Football League side Kano Pillars.

“It is good that Musa has finally secured a new club in Europe which fits his status as Super Eagles captain,” Ikpeba (pictured below) told Complete Sports .

“I think the move to Turkey is coming at a very good time for him ahead of next season and with the World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON finals coming up.
“Ahmed Musa has come of age in the Eagles and I ranked him among the greatest Nigerian strikers till date for scoring four goals for Nigeria in two World Cup outings.
“The goals were quality strikes too, you know. They were technically solid goals scored against top teams and at the biggest football event in the world.
“That is no mean feat because it is a record which other Nigerian strikers will be striving to break in the future,” said Ikpeba who himself scored a goal for Nigeria at the France ’98 World Cup.

Barcelona teenager Ilaix Moriba has revealed the racist abuse that he’s been sent during his ongoing contract dispute with the club.
Moriba’s future is the subject of much speculation at the moment, with Barca struggling to tie the 18-year-old down to fresh terms after seeing him enter the final 12 months of his current deal.

After breaking into the Blaugrana first-team squad last season, Moriba is now being left out of the club’s pre-season plans, and has been receiving abuse online as a result of the saga.

The talented young midfielder took to social media on Monday to show his followers some of the hateful messages he has received, with many of the posts in question including monkey and middle finger emojis.

At the end of the Tik Tok video, the phrase “‘en serio” appears on screen, which translates to asking the question “seriously?” in English.

Lucas Torreira admits the “bad time” he endured during his second season at Arsenal in 2019-20 saw him seek the help of a psychologist.
The Uruguay international midfielder saw plenty of football for the Gunners after joining from Sampdoria in 2018, but took in a managerial change as a coaching baton passed from Unai Emery to Mikel Arteta.

He also suffered a serious ankle injury in March 2020, with a lack of continuity in his game leading him to seek out professional assistance in a mental health battle.

Torreira told El Otro Partido:

“A year ago I was working with a psychologist in Spain because, in the second year at Arsenal, I played very little.

“It was hard for me to really take it in because my life depends on football and when I don’t play I have a very bad time, I am in a very bad mood and many things happen.

“That’s why I started with him and he was giving me a hand with that topic.

“Many years ago they would say to you ‘but how are you going to go to a psychologist, are you crazy?’ And today it is very important, especially for those of us who experience a lot of situations in terms of being away from your family.”
