Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, the wife of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has spoken out about her husband’s detention by the Nigerian government.

Nigerian security and intelligence forces have recently detained Kanu.

After fleeing bail in 2017, he was repatriated to face his charges again.

The secessionist is currently being held in DSS custody till the resumption of his trial on July 26.

Uchechi said she was saddened when she learned that her husband had been re-arrested and returned to the United Kingdom in an interview with The Sunday Times in the United Kingdom.

Since the event in late June, she said she hasn’t heard from her husband.

“It’s hard for me to speak. I’m extremely devastated. He has been beaten and tortured and I am scared for his life.

“I was always worried about Nnamdi. When you’re asking for freedom from dictatorship, you are a target. But when I saw what happened in Belarus and how no one did anything, I knew nowhere was safe.

“The Nigerian government carrying out this rendition is a crime. We’re not even talking about independence,” She was quoted as saying.
