As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire,
each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for
Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak,
with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes
— every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were
going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the
state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist,
the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a
registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or
severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.
“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted,
particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who
tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back
the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having
entered the country illegally — powers normally
reserved to the border police who work for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to
mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at
the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race
for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with
the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White
House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’
concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona
ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh,
a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise
to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

Nov 29 (Reuters) –
The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average notched record closing
highs in a shortened Black Friday session, lifted by technology stocks
such as Nvidia, while retail was in focus as the
holiday shopping season kicked off.
Information technology stocks helped boost the benchmark S&P
500 and blue-chip Dow, which was also aided by industrial stocks.
Nvidia gained 2%, while Tesla rose 3.7%.
Investors monitored shoppers’ response to deep Black Friday
discounts. Adobe Analytics estimated consumers would spend a record $10.8 billion in online purchases, up
9.9% from Black Friday last year.
Shares of Target rose 1.7% and Macy’s climbed 1.8%.
The S&P 500 rose 0.56% to 6,032.44 points after breaching its intraday record high of 6,025.42 set on Nov.
26.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.42% to 44,910.65 points.
The Nasdaq gained 0.83% at 19,218.17 points.
“Retailers do a lot of importing. Inventory levels are very important to their profitability and ability to kind of control margins, so they will be one of the industries in the (tariffs) crossfire,”
said Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird.
“But so far … (things are) looking pretty solid for the Black Friday, Cyber Monday sale.”
Chip stocks rebounded from Wednesday’s declines, sending the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index 1.5% higher.
The small-cap Russell 2000 index also rose
0.4% as Treasury bond yields retreated further from multi-month highs.
Wall Street’s main indexes had closed lower on Wednesday,
with the Nasdaq leading declines, as technology stocks slumped on Thanksgiving eve on worries the Federal
Reserve may be cautious about rate cuts following stubbornly strong U.S.
inflation data.
Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election earlier this month, along with his Republican Party winning the majority
in both houses of Congress, provided the latest boost to equities.
Investors were pricing in expectations that Trump’s pro-business policies could spur economic growth and corporate profits.
However, concerns prevailed that they could also stoke inflation,
slow the pace of the Fed’s rate cuts and weigh on global growth.
Traders expect the U.S. central bank to lower borrowing costs by 25 basis points
at its December meeting, but see it pausing rate cuts in January, the CME Group’s FedWatch showed.
Crypto stocks rose on the back of gains in bitcoin, boosting MARA Holdings by 1.9%.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.46-to-1 ratio on the NYSE.

The S&P 500 posted 31 new 52-week highs and no new lows while
the Nasdaq Composite recorded 116 new highs and
31 new lows.
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 8.15 billion shares during a
shortened trading week, compared with the roughly 15 billion full-session average over the last 20
trading days.
For the week, the S&P 500 gained 1.06%, the Nasdaq rose 1.13%, and the Dow climbed
1.39%. The Russell 2000 Small Cap index rose 1.48%, after hitting a record high earlier in the week.

NEW YORK, Dec 3 (Reuters) –
The Nasdaq and S&P 500 edged higher on Tuesday as tech-related shares extended recent gains and investors digested reassuring comments from Federal Reserve policymakers.
Two policymakers
said they see inflation
heading down to the U.S. central bank’s 2% target and that the
job market is “solid.”
They stayed away from signaling whether they would support another interest rate cut later this month.
On Monday, Fed Governor Christopher Waller said he was
inclined “at present” to support another rate cut this
month.
The Nasdaq hit an intraday record high earlier.
“This is a market that has performed extremely well. You want it to pause, take a breather and wait for another catalyst to push it higher,” said
Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist, LPL Financial
in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Investors will pay close attention to the U.S.
monthly employment report on Friday. A November reading of private payrolls is due on Wednesday.
Shares of Amazon rose 1.1%. The company announced a new slate of artificial intelligence platforms, known as
foundation models, at its annual AWS conference.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 35.75 points, or
0.08%, to 44,746.25. The S&P 500 climbed 2.30 points, or 0.04%,
to 6,049.45 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 45.56 points, or 0.23%, to 19,449.51.
The S&P 500 rose 5.7% in November as former U.S.
President Donald Trump recaptured the White House in the
Nov. 5 election and his Republican Party swept
both houses of Congress. The index is up about 27% for the
year to date.
U.S.-listed shares of South Korean companies declined, with iShares MSCI South Korea ETF down 1.7%, after President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in the country.
Shares of Tesla fell 2.2% after data showed the automaker’s sales of
China-made electric vehicles fell 4.3% year-on-year to
78,856 in November.
