OMOMEWA’S ASSASINATION – HOW VICE-CHANCELLORS, RECTORS, PROVOSTS AND LECTURERS COMMON PRACTICE OF POLITICAL & ACADEMIC WITCH-HUNTING OF STUDENT ACTIVISTS MURDERED A SHINNING LIGHT; NANS LAGOS BLOWS HOT AND MAKE DEMANDS ON GOV. SANWO-OLU.

The death of Comrade Yusuf Nurudeen Alowonle popularly known as Omomeewa was one that shouldn’t have happened if the management of LASU hasn’t played the devil’s advocate in his life and as the umbrella body of the students body in Lagos State we can’t afford to let this get swept under the carpet.

The untimely death which shook the school to the foundations came as a surprise to many considering the depth and calibre of the person Comrade OMOMEEWA is.

While we have been very busy with the corpse recovery and other negative razzmatazz that followed his death, we have also been properly taking our time to meticulously investigate the matter for the fact that led to the death in order to make our stand known to the public.

Comrade Yusuf Nurudeen Alowonle (OMOMEEWA) first gained admission to study BUSINESS EDUCATION at MICHAEL OTEDOLA COLLEGE OF PRIMARY EDUCATION (MOCOPED) in 2012 for his tertiary education and later proceeded via gaining admission to study ACCOUNTING EDUCATION (B.Sc/ B.Ed) at LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY in 2016. During his primary as well as secondary school days he was (for most of the period) the CLASS CAPTAIN and a Prefect of one sector of student duty or the other.

Despite being a cool, calm, easygoing perfect gentleman that he is, at inception of lecture after admission into each of the two tertiary institutions he attended above, his leadership prowess was clearly written all over him that his level mates unanimously elected him CLASS REPRESENTATIVE/HEAD OF CLASS(H.O.C). It is therefore no gainsaying that OMOMEEWA has been a leader from birth. At MOCOPED, he was elected and served as the PUBLIC RELATION OFFICER(P.R.O) of the institution’s STUDENTS’ UNION under the leadership of Comrade Akinwande Grace. In LASU, he was not only a CLASS REP/H.O.C throughout his LASU days but also a one time elected LASU-SUG(LASUSU-SPC) SENATOR representing the Faculty of Education (MOTHER OF ALL FACULTIES).

Thereafter, through the gallant and articulate advocacy of the then LASUSU-SPC MAJORITY LEADER, Senator Arotiba O. Affluence who recognises OMOMEEWA’S impeccable precedence in comradic doggedity and altruism, he was appointed the AUDITOR GENERAL of the entire LASU-SUG by the then Speaker(Rt. Hon. Abdulkareem Ridwan. O p.k.a ARTY) during the Comrade Olalere Samuel Moshood Owoseni p.k.a SAMGRIN led LASU-SUG administration.

Prior to is academic voyage in LASU, he has been a very active member of EDUCATION RIGHTS CAMPAIGN ([E.R.C] a non-governmental organisation made up of student activists with the sole sworn objective of agitating for the right indices of education for a Nigerian child) under the leadership of Comr Hassan Taiwo a.k.a Soweto . He was at his death, the E.R.C LAGOS COORDINATOR. In 2020, He also served assiduously, judiciously and successfully as the campaign chairman of DE GRIN MOVEMENT that brought the emergence of SAMGRIN OFAFRICA as the Chairman NANS JCC LAGOS AXIS.

Comr OMOMEEWA contested for the office of the LASU-SUG President in his quest to stop being an ordinary observer and be the public office holding prototype to effect the change he has been preaching. It was the right timing to quit criticizing from a distance but to occupy the position of leadership in order to effect the envisioned change to guarantee student welfarism as it ought to be. However, in line with the usual machiavellian and witch-hunting practise of the “FAGBOHUN LED LASU MANAGEMENT”, after plotting similar scheme to constructively disqualify AROTIBA OLAWALE AFFLUENCE from the LASU-SUG presidential race, OMOWEEWA was rigged out of victory through the instrumentality of ELECTRONIC VOTING which was under the control of LASU ICT. Comrade OMOMEEWA having emerged second runner up in the obviously over-rigged election, sagaciously contested and protested against the election results in many ways which the FAGBOHUN LED LASU MANAGEMENT adjudged denigrating to their person. Also, the Fagbohun-led management could not forgive Comrade Omomewa for supporting and solidarising with leaders and members of ASUU-LASU when they were sacked and victimised by the LASU management for challenging Prof Fagbohun’s qualification for Vice Chancellorship of the institution as well as his tyrannical and anti-worker policies. Hence they decided to victimize him by conjuring a non-existent disciplinary case of ADMISSION RACKETEERING against him in order to expel him and permanently extinguish his dream career.

He was billed to graduate in 2019/2020 and proceed to NATIONAL SERVICE but for this frivolous allegation of ADMISSION RACKETEERING which LASU MANAGEMENT accused him of through a poorly executed theartrics. This they did as a managerial vendetta on his person and their own form of reprisal attack on him for his unrepentant exposure of their dirty linens, can of worms and heinous acts of grossly heightened corruption to the world.
“Comr OMOMEEWA on 28th of January 2020 published on his FACEBOOK timeline (https://www.facebook.com/100002232797401/posts/2484266734991062/?app=fbl) the true fact of how he was set up by LASU MANAGEMENT before he was accused and alleged of ADMISSION RACKETEERING. On a later date March 4th 2020, he also published (https://www.facebook.com/100002232797401/posts/2756925297725203/?app=fbl) his ordeal while facing Professor Adeleke Fakoya led LASU-SDC(STUDENT DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE) who only plays FAGBOHUN’S script”.

Having seen the degree of error that tainted their cooked case and how legally flawed it is, Prof Adeleke Fakoya led LASU-SDC with the deliberate intent to stall and frustrate OMOMEEWA refused to revisit the matter for two long years thereby barring OMOMEEWA from official graduation, convocation, clearance and NYSC mobilization despite concluding his final semester examination the result of which duly reflects on his academic profile.

He was, before his death, again recently invited to face the SDC on 18th of August 2021 unknown to him that the panel sitting was only a decoy and that plans have been concluded to waylay and assassinate him. On the reception of the invitation he made several calls and chats to inform trusted allies in Student activism to make it a date in solidarity against oppression.

The attack on Omomeewa occurred while he was in the company of a staff of the University, Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi, a Senior Assistant Registrar. The incident took place in the evening of Wednesday 18th August, 2021 around 10:25 pm in front of the University Campus gate, along the Egbeda Igando Road. Omomeewa had avail himself to appear before the panel that same day as scheduled but the panel couldn’t attend to his case, due to some trivial issues and his case was concluded before 2pm. Since leaving the panel waiting room before 2pm, Omomeewa as a free, law abiding citizen decides to remained on the university campus to reconnect with his friends among students and staff of the university till late in the evening during which time he met up with Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi. The duo consociate at the University Senior Staff Club until past 8pm in the evening after which they left together through the Iba Gate of the University for their destinations. Unable to get vehicles at the School junction as it was late in the day, the duo attempted trekkeding few metres away from the gate in search of a vehicle during which they were attacked by some unknown gunmen, dispossessed of their phone to incapacitate them from reaching anyone and shot.

Mr. Majekodunmi only escaped with the gunshot wounds and eventually got helped by unknown persons to a nearby hospital, but Omomeewa was abandoned and did not survive the attack. His body was later first discovered lying lifeless on the road by ADOLF POLICE PATROL TEAN and was deposited in a mortuary in Lagos. The news of his demise was only broken to LASU Community, friends and family on the late evening hours of Thursday 19th of August 2021 after he was discovered AWOL(Absent Without Official Leave but without intent to desert.) for about twenty-four hours.

We got to the Morgue of Mainland Hospital, Yaba in the morning of Friday 20th August 2021. We met Comrade Barrister Optimist in the presence of some doctors and other well wishers. Shortly after we got there, we were shown what was said to be the remains of our dear Comrade Omomewa. It was nothing more than a mass of entrails which was highly decomposed and put together in a body bag. The Morgue manager claimed that those who brought the “body” – the Lagos State Environmental Agency – claimed that vehicles had gone over the “body” between the period of 10pm Wednesday night when he died and 5am Thursday morning it was brought to the Morgue. Upon seeing the state of the purported body, we had to protest saying that there was no means to identify the entrail as a human entrail let alone a human body. We said there was no way we could present this to the family as the “body” of their son. Our protest, including the assistance of sympathetic student doctors who studied in LASU and the HOD Pathology, eventually led to the revelation by one of the Morgue attendants that they made a mistake and presented to us a wrong body. Eventually, they brought for us another body which was clearly and obviously that of comrade Omomewa. This body had a hole by the side just under the rib cage on the left hand side of the chest.

With this development, the tension which had built up calmed a bit. By this time, some representatives of the family were already within the Morgue premises. We then initiated discussion with the family about what needs to be done. Our first proposal was that an autopsy be conducted. However, by the time we began making enquiries about how long this would take, we were informed that it might take at least a week due to the ongoing doctors strike. This made the family insist the body be buried that very day. Those of us pushing for an autopsy had no choice but to succumb to the desire of the family. The family also gave us the right to choose any befitting burial place for him. In view of this, we began to inquire about what it would take to bury him. We eventually settled for Atan cemetery Yaba and we arrived at a budget of N125,000 being the cost of buying a strip of land for burial, digging, preparing of the burial place including marble as well as cost of pall bearers and conveyance of the body from the Morgue. Within the space of an hour, we were able to raise this sum.

Also the family had procured the clothes for the body while documentations for the body’s release were being prepared. One of the documents needed was a release letter from the police. We decided to ask some comrades in LASU to proceed to the Adoff Police station in Iba to obtain this document. By the time they came with the documents, the DPO of Adoff police station, a woman police officer, was in their tow. According to her, Omomewa was her son and she felt the need to be there personally to secure the release of his body. However it was her presence, suspicious utterances and that of her men that eventually changed the situation and led to the non-release of the body. For instance, while discussing with the DPO, a few questions became apparent. One, the police claimed a patrol found the body around 10pm. This patrol decided to call the Lagos State environmental agency to pick this body for disposal. The agency did not show up until 5am the next morning. During this time, there was no record that the police offered any first aid assistance to Omomewa or even tried to take him to the hospital to see if he could be revived. As we all know, only qualified medical personnel, and not the police, can declare a body dead or lifeless.

Secondly, the DPO claimed that the police patrol was around the vicinity where the attack and killing took place so they ought to have heard gunshot if truly Omomewa and Majek were shot. According to the police, they were not shot but stabbed. However, when the mortuary attendants who prepared Omomewa’s body and sutured his wound were interviewed, they claimed that the wound they observed on the body could only be caused by gunshot. This also coincided with the testimony of the lone survivor, Majek, who said they were shot. Not so much after this, we realised that all the claims by the police about what happened were not an outcome of investigation but rather simply ill informed conjectures and lies. For instance, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) who prepared the police extract for the body’s release revealed that he had not for once sighted the body for which he prepared a report neither had he or any officer from Adoff Police station visited the scene of crime or conducted any interview of potential witnesses. So in short, more than 24 hours after the killing, the police had not started any investigation. This situation led to anger and raised tension. But while this controversy was going on, a directive came from the Chief Pathologist of Lagos STATE, Prof Obafunwa, to the mortuary asking that the body should not be released until an autopsy is conducted. Ofcourse, with this new development, both the family and the police had no choice but to submit. So eventually the burial had to be suspended.

Given all of these developments, we are now left with the option of pursuing a legal and political campaign for justice for Omomewa. This provides opportunity to be able to force out the truth of what actually transpired and the motives for his murder. We will continue to publish updates of developments around this case as well as information of every step we are taking. By tomorrow, a plan of activities to begin the pursuit of justice will also be out.

Critical commonsensical investigative view of these events from onset till date sheds pinpoints our eagle eye on four-in-one major suspects who are ALPHA players in the events which unfolded to lead to the death of OMOMEEWA. These persons are the immediate past Vice-chancellor of LASU, Prof Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun, LASU CSO Mr Kolade, OC LASU-SIEU Mr EDU(from the article he published on online News platforms after the successful reinstatement of Arotiba O. Affluence http://saharareporters.com/2021/05/27/lagos-state-university-reinstates-500-level-law-student-expelled-illegally) and the CHAIRMAN LASU-SDC, Professor Adeleke Fakoya.

From the itinerary of events that culminated into the death of COMRADE YNA OMOMEEWA, it is our logical reasoning, deduction and stance that assuming without conceding that there is any shred of truth in the publication of LASU MANAGEMENT through the Coordinator, Centre for Information Press and Public Relations LASU (CIPPR LASU) Mr Ademola Adekoya, deceiving the public and promoting their own well-doctored narrative of their crime, the fact that they initiated events into motion that brought OMOMEEWA on campus that black Wednesday still remains the irrefutable obstinate truth. At such if by any chance, LASU MANAGEMENT escapes criminal liability as the principal offender in OMOMEEWA’S murder, it will inevitably be found liable as an aider, abetter or procurer of the crime through its obvious malicious act of unfounded indictment and allegation of ADMISSION RACKETEERING on the deceased with which he was lured to campus to breathe his last.

The assasination and nature of events which lead to the death of our dear comrade is a gross violation of all of our collective rights as “injury against one is injury against all”.
On this note of highly venerated stance, NANS LAGOS CHAPTER with an estimated population of over 4.1million students and led by able Comrade SAMGRIN hereby UNEQUIVOCALLY DEMAND THAT LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT in the next three(3) days as a matter of urgency, non-negotiably do the following without any diminishing qualification:

1.HIS EXCELLENCY, THE GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE MUST MAKE A PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE TRAGIC DEMISE OF COMRADE Omomewa and also ensure that an autopsy is done within the shortest possible time in order to respect the wishes of the family who wants to bury their son.

2. HIS EXCELLENCY, THE GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE MUST SET UP A PANEL OF INQUIRY made up of representatives of NANS, LASUSU, ASUU, SSANU, NLC Lagos, ERC, JAF and other PRO-WORKING people organisations TO INVESTIGATE THE Circumstances Surrounding OMOMEWA’S DEATH including the complicity of the management of the Lagos State University.

3. HIS EXCELLENCY, THE GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE Shall Ensure the posthumous release of Omomeewa’s certificate from LASU and CONSEQUENTLY DESIGN AN HONEST LAUDABLE RELIEF PACKAGE FOR HIS WIFE AND THREE MONTHS OLD SON.

4. HIS EXCELLENCY, THE GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE SHALL GIVE COMRADE OMOMEEWA A STATE BEFITTING BURIAL CEREMONY AND FIND A WAY TO IMMORTALIZE HIM.

5. SECURITY OF ALL TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS CAMPUSES ACROSS LAGOS MUST BE GIVEN SPECIAL CONSIDERATION.
The ultimatum ends by 4pm on Wednesday 25th, 2021 and we would not hesitate to do the needful within our Democratic rights to make our demands met. “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes a duty”
Comrade Omomeewa is one who fought for the rights of other students and we promise, even in death, we would fight for him.
